On Kitchen Duty

Here at my place of employment, there is a system for keeping the kitchen clean. It’s called Kitchen Duty.

For 1 week a year (which I realize isn’t that much) every employee is assigned to Kitchen Duty. It’s your job to run, empty and even load the dishwasher, if dishes have accumulated in the sink while it was running. Aside from the serious issues I have with touching other people’s crusty, soaking, slimy, grimy dishes they leave in the sink to be loaded into the dishwasher, you are also required to restock the coffee bar (which I don’t use), clean the counters (which I don’t touch), and clean out the splattery microwaves (which I don’t use).

I couldn’t work from home today because this is my week.

So I’m curious…what is the kitchen/dish policy at your job?

  1. xcan answered: We don’t have a dish washer so we all need to wash our own dishes and unload the drying rack when you see fit.
  2. tinytortfeasor answered: Ours is two/three (scattered) weeks throughout the year, but we only clean counters, coffee pots, etc. No dishwasher. No crusty dishes.
  3. refindstyle answered: Do our own dishes and Friday afternoon any in the sink go in the trash along with any food in the fridge. Janitor does fridge & counters.
  4. dorothypzbornak answered: Oh god I would die if I had to do this. I hate doing my own dishes. We do our own here, not sure who runs the dishwasher at night.
  5. td-tinydancer said: We wash our own dishes. Then we have a woman who cleans the counters and restocked. Whoever gets in first makes the coffee.
  6. sciencingsara answered: We distribute housekeeping duties fairly- one person does floors, I get the mail, two people clean the kitchen weekly. Do your own dishes.
  7. imeanduh answered: we have building cleaners for the counters. but our office does a “sunshine committee” who restocks all of the coffee/snacks. for a year
  8. notsoplainandtall said: Every man for himself. We’re adults and should act like it and clean up after ourselves in a shared space.
  9. keepinitweil said: Oh girl that’s the receptionist’s job around here. Also: basic understanding that you load your dishes into the dishwasher and don’t leave them bathing in their own filth in the sink. Ew, no.
  10. beccaannabell answered: if you make the mess you clean it.
  11. valerina said: The person who runs the coffee tried to get me to buy creamer and sugar one time (when I was still drinking the coffee here..now I make my own at home). I was like, “No. I don’t use them. I’ll buy coffee but that’s it.” Not my responsibility!
  12. jumpingfeetfirst answered: Everyone has to do their own dishes and put them in the drainboard. No dishwasher, but everyone was pretty responsible about their stuff.
  13. rustydotcom answered: we have a strict “you are an adult so f*ckin’ clean up after yourself, bitches!” policy
  14. cynicismandspunk said: The receptionist keeps the counters/microwaves clean and does all coffee-related things. We’re supposed to wash our own dishes, though I’ve seen some people ask their secretaries to wash theirs, which I think is lazy.
  15. missblogger said: clean up after yourself in our coffee area. we have a cafe so there is no kitchen
  16. blonderandomthoughts said: My work is clean up after yourself. Do your own dishes, wipe the microwave when you’re done, replace the water if the 5gal bottle is empty and etc. But I also work with 300 people, so a weekly rotation wouldn’t work.
  17. cleverlikewhoa answered: last place i worked was the WORST. why grown ass adults can’t just clean the dishes they use and keep things tidy, I’ll never know!
  18. joannafreed said: I would kill for a dishwasher. We all do our own stuff, aka twice a week Joanna does a kitchen clean overhaul because newsflash, everyone on Earth is DISGUSTING.
  19. adultlifetaketwo answered: We do every person for themselves. I like this because otherwise eww!
  20. kitcater answered: We have our office staff/janitors take care of the kitchen. Dishes I think are kinda left up to you, & its frowned upon to leave them there.
  21. tehvalerie answered: We have a cleaning crew (and also no dishwasher) but I’ve never worked anywhere with assigned kitchen duty. Probably bc we’re all grownups.
  22. itsohkayt answered: Do your own dishes. Leave dishes in the sink and our boss hunts you down and murders you.
  23. itsalwaysb answered: OH hell no. Clean up after yourself. What if don’t use dishes compared to someone who brings like 5 containers. EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELF
  24. callmerobin answered: Everyone loads their own, and if the dishwashwer is clean you either have to unload it or handwash your dishes. I always handwash…
  25. muppetpants answered: Pft kitchen? We only have asbestos.
  26. tamsgot answered: We have a similar thing. It ends up that everyone is assigned 2 days every 3 months or so. Even the CEO has his kitchen duty days
